“We do not merely study the past: we inherit it, and inheritance brings with it not only the rights of ownership, but the duties of trusteeship.” – Roger Scruton
Compiled in memory of the late Ed Stott from Pinner, Middlesex, Trials Guru has pulled together a results archive taken mainly from the notes, reports and papers meticulously maintained by Ed Stott over the years, when he took the Scottish Six Days Trial story out to motor clubs around the country back in the 1960s. Ed Stott was indeed the trustee of the history of the Scottish Six Days Open Reliability Trial.
Ed Stott had a tremendous interest in the Scottish Six Days Trial and he gave slide-show presentations to motorcycle clubs, which helped tell the history of the event which has its roots back as far as 1909. His records pertaining to the Scottish are comprehensive, with many press reports of the day which give the reader a fascinating insight to the event’s history which has been long forgotten. Ed Stott’s ‘Scottish’ records were passed, shortly before his death, to Deryk Wylde who subsequently passed them on to John Moffat at Trials Guru in December 2025.
We most certainly don’t want these results and reports to be totally forgotten, as they have been up until now, so we have decided to replicate them and publish on Trials Guru for all to see. Never before has these early results been published in full, along with routes, not even by the organising club.

Please remember that the ‘Scottish’ trial started as early as 1909 as a five day event, organised by the Edinburgh Motor Cycling Club. The awards, and hence the results format changed, after 1932 when an individual event winner was declared. The Edinburgh & District Motor Club Ltd (Incorporated on 2nd May 1911) took over the organisation of the event in 1911.

We also pay tribute to the work of T. D. ‘Tommy’ Sandham who sat for many hours researching the history of the SSDT in Glasgow’s Mitchell Library back in the mid 1980s when he was engaged in writing two books on the trial. These were ‘The Scottish 1900-1962’ (published 1988) and ‘The Scottish – 1963 – 1989’ (published 1989) which were self published by Tommy under Willow Publishing (Magor).
The results throw up some long forgotten models and manufacturer’s names which readers will no doubt ponder over. The routes will make the reader marvel at the terrific distances covered by the competitors on what was quite simple machinery, over very poor roads. The event was a true test of both rider and machine.
Here are some points of information to assist the reader when viewing these records, a little explanation before you start!
In the early years, motorcycles were rated by their output, known as ‘horse power’ therefore the letters ‘hp’ denotes the output. In later years the displacement in cubic centimeters or cubic capacity was used as ‘cc’. As a rough rule of thumb, every 1 hp equates to 100cc, so a 3 1/2hp would be roughly equivalent to a 350cc machine.
There were ‘observed hills’ throughout the route, where possible, these have been noted near, or within, the route details as (O.H.).
The letters ‘sc’ refer to ‘sidecar’.
We have, where appropriate, used the naming convention of the time when reported. Today the event is known as the Scottish Six Days Trial, however in past times it was referred to somewhat differently.
Unfortunately, some results, mileages and minor details are missing, these are noted at the appropriate year. We hope this doesn’t detract from the reading experience significantly.
So let us begin by taking you back well over 100 years to when the sport or past-time of motorcycling was born. To a time when belt drives, caliper brakes and machines with novel sounding names were the norm and wonder at the distances covered by the riders over water-bound surfaces.

[1] Early Report, July 21st 1909 – The Motor Cycle:
Scottish Five Days’ Open Reliability Trial. The Start on Monday Last. By B.H. Davies.
“The Edinburgh Motor Cycling Club deserves hearty congratulations upon the scheme and organisationof its trial. The competition will resemble a pleasure tour more than any previous competition, as there are only two checks a day, apart from meals, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Nevertheless, it will be the severest motor cycling trial ever held, thanks to the surface of the roads, the severity of the gradients, and the head winds, and I have little hesitation in prophesying that only half a dozen machines are likely to come through with full marks. At the start on Monday last a strong wind was blowing from the north. Amulree, Grampians, Berriedale, and Ord have to be climbed, yet the Advance is only the two-speed machine. Some have not even got adjustable pulleys. The weather at the start was bright and windy, but fleecy clouds threatened rain when the official car left for Amulree. Six competitors … did not register as starters, viz. Muirhead, Moodie, Baxter, Niven, Kennedy, and Gilmour. The first day’s route was the hardest. Amulree at sixty-seven miles, Grampians after lunch, 186 1/2 miles altogether against a headwind. The Grampians are in a badly cut up condition. The route for to-day (Wednesday) was altered to go up over the steep two miles’ gradient from Bonar to Alness. Route finding is well provided for by arrows; also each competitor receives direction card daily.“
B.H. Davies was accompanying the competitors to John o’ Groats from Edinburgh.

[2] 1921 In Retrospect – “In entry, in difficulty, and in interest, the Scottish Six Days event, organised by the Edinburgh M.C. during the hottest week in summer, took a premier position. Dry weather until the last day cheered the competitors and disappointed the club ; but one or two new mountaineering “finds” – including the seemingly never-ending Cork-screw at Inverfarigaig – and the reappearance of some old friends in the shape of the six mile Applecross and the deceptive Glendoe, more than equalised matters. Prospective buyers should look down last year’s Scottish award list ; only good riders on sound machines gained “golds.” Sunbeams gained the team prize and generally made an excellent showing.”

[3] 1922 – The Finish – “After the finish the club entertained the riders at a smoking concert in the Dunedin Rooms. The chief features were the presentation of the medals (already by some miracle engraved with the names of their winners), and the showing of a cinema film of the Monday’s ride, including Amulree and Kenmore Hills. Speeches were commendably short, and Mortimer Batten brought down the house in replying to the toast of ‘The competitors’. He said they had all enjoyed the Six Days, but were jolly glad it wasn’t a Seven Days.”

[4] Additional information on rider number 15, Emilio L. Pieraccini of Tain, Scotland who gained a silver medal in this year, 1927:
From 1890 to 1915, it is believed that some three million Italians made their way to America in search of a better life. Changes in Italian politics and the economy had seen Northern Italy industrialize only to leave the rest of the nation poverty stricken. Florindo Pieraccini who lived in Barga, Tuscany, was one of those gentlemen and decided to do something about it.
An opportunity was to emigrate to the United States of America, where jobs and business opportunities were aplenty. The majority of those who emigrated were farm labourers, country folk or “contadini”, and craftsmen such as carpenters, tailors or barbers.
Many who took this action would eventually find themselves moving on once again, this time to Scotland, where they arrived in Glasgow prior to the onset of the First World War, making the city their home for many years.
Back home in Barga, Tuscany a twelve-year-old Emilio Pieraccini, who was affectionately known as ‘Leo’, son of Florindo Pieraccini, was preparing to make the move that would change his life forever. Accompanying his step-uncle Luigi Serafini, he left Italy for Scotland to join his father in 1918.
After four years in Glasgow, the Pieraccini family moved north as the Great Depression affected business in Glasgow, where they would make their home, and set up in business, in the Caithness fishing town of Wick.
Florindo became a shopkeeper, taking advantage of the thriving ‘take-away’ culture, selling ice cream, confectionary and fish and chips in a style typical of many early 20th century Italian run cafés throughout Scotland. It was well thought of that Italian families made the best fish and chips in Scotland!
Florindo’s sons, Leo, Carlo, Pietro and eldest brother Primo were very able assistants, spending their teenage years learning the trade. By 1928, Leo and Primo had gone into business together, buying a café in Tain. Pietro opened a wireless shop in Thurso and was one of the very first TV engineers in the north of Scotland.

The café in Tain was known as the ‘Chocolate Shop’ and although the brothers retained the name, they mounted a nameplate above the sign outside the shop, which read ‘Pieraccini Bros’.
Primo then set up in business in Inverness with Carlo ‘Charlie’ Pieraccini with the Popular Cafe on the corner of Post Office Avenue and Academy Street.
The shop became known locally as ‘Pers’ and Leo himself became something of a character in the town. Leo took every opportunity to promote the Tain cause. He even went so far as to personally stamp the words ‘Visit Tain, the oldest Royal Burgh in Scotland’ on paper currency as it passed through the till in his shop.
An effective method of advertising no doubt, with the eyes of Britain’s money spending public on the notes as they passed through their hands. Or rather it was effective, at least until a visit from the Police who called a halt to the ploy! Visiting his establishment, they promptly warned him that, ‘despite the benefits to the local economy, this practice must cease!’
Among other things, Leo was of course an enthusiastic motorcyclist. He was known for demonstrating his riding skills on the parks of the Links at Tain and of course, as we now know, Leo won a coveted and well-earned silver medal in the Scottish Six Days Trial in 1927 on his 348cc Douglas. In fact, while courting a young Roseanna in the mid 1920s, he could regularly be seen riding through the town of Tain with his wife-to-be in the sidecar.
