OffRoad Archive

This unique feature is a compilation of the trials material collected over many years by motorcycling enthusiast, Deryk Wylde who passed away on Sunday, 7th December 2025 aged 87 years. The information and photographs was entrusted to the Trials Guru website in 2024, so continuing the free access for enthusiasts of the sport worldwide. Deryk wished these photographs to be in safe hands and free to view. Many of the images were taken at the Scottish Six Days Trial, as well as national trial events over the years.

Deryk Wylde was a journalist for several motorcycle publications, who created his own ‘Off Road Review’ magazines which was very popular in the 1990s. His work was well researched and was well illustrated by prolific photographs. He also published several books on motorcycle sport as Ariel Publishing, sold under his Nostalia Books brand.

Deryk Wylde on his Ariel HT5, a model he had a great affinity to.

In accordance with Deryk’s conditions and specific instructions, these photographs will be freely accessible to trials enthusiasts the world over, to be enjoyed by as many people as possible.

Ed Stott:

Many of these photographs were in the possession of the late Ed Stott from Pinner, Middlesex who bought the copyright and had them made into slides for his around the country talks on the Scottish Six Days Trial. Ed gave these talks to various motorcycle clubs and associations over the years. Stott was a ‘superenthusiast’ of the SSDT and trials in general, he was a rider, official and spectator at the SSDT. Stott earned the respect of the SSDT committee of the Edinburgh & District Motor Club Ltd and it’s clerk of courses over the years. Ed entrusted his motorcycling photographic collection to Deryk Wylde prior to his death. Ed Stott was a graphic designer by profession, and very much a sporting motorcyclist. Please also regard this page on Trials Guru as a tribute to the late Ed Stott.

Ed Stott had collected a significant amount of information on the SSDT, his first attendance as a rider was in 1947 and he rode until 1953. He attended every SSDT from then until 1995. Ed had been a competitor, an official and a spectator at the annual event. He had struck up a friendship with Charlie Rogers of Royal Enfield and this was to be a very useful relationship over the years.

Deryk Wylde persuaded Ed Stott to provide information, anecdotes and photographs to enable the book entitled ‘Lochaber Rich Mixture – Memories of the Scottish Six Days Trial‘ to be published in May 2000 by Ariel Publishing. The foreword was written by none other than Gordon Jackson of AJS fame. Some of the photos below have appeared in that book.

The photo that was used on the cover of ‘Lochaber Rich Mixture’ which was taken in 1956 at the foot of the ‘White Corries’ now Glencoe Mountain Resort. Left to Right: E. Cowley (20, Francis Barnett); Clive Mills (Norman); D. Russell (22, Norman); Vic Willougby standing; Bill Faulkner (25, Triumph); Ron Thomson (24, HJH); Bobby Neison (34, DMW) – Photo: OffRoad Archive.

It is with great pleasure that Trials Guru website have been entrusted with these images. Not forgetting the hardy band of photographers, many of whom are not recorded, thus being unknown, who spent their time taking and developing their work, all – DEDICATED TO TRIAL.
